The Butterfly Hunters

One of the first things the grandkiddos did when we got settled at the condo was to hunt butterflies. They had come prepared with dollar store butterfly nets for the hunt. Grandpa coaches Jack on the fine art of butterfly hunting.

And, the hunt is on. With a determined look in his eyes, Jack sets out on his own.

His hunting skills come naturally and he almost bags the elusive white butterfly!

Even Dad tries his skills at tropical butterfly hunting.

Ella is a top-notch, patient butterfly hunter and her skills pay off. Grandpa Wayne helps her and gives her instruction on how to release the butterfly into the jar without harm.

All in all, a very successful first day of butterfly hunting in the tropical paradise of Bahia Pez Vela.

We have seen so much wildlife here. The most interesting have been the Howler Monkeys. They are very loud! This morning we were awakened at about 5:00 by some of the vocalizing.

According to the New World Encyclopedia, their loud roars can be heard by humans, even three miles away through dense jungle and they have been called the loudest animals in the New World (Dunn2008)

Howler Monkeys are folivores. They eat mainly top canopy leaves, together with fruit, buds, stems, flowers and nuts.

They travel around the jungle area above our condo. Sometimes we've seen them right in back of our house! We've really enjoyed monkey-watching :)

Los Peces Salidos (the fish that got away)

On Monday night, Wayne and I went fishing on the beach. We used ballyhoo as bait. It is a half-beak fish.

Another beautiful sunset. I love the blue hue that the sun provided.

We didn't have any luck fishing off the rocks around the beach, so we tried on the surf.

I caught a puffer after an exhausting fight :)!!!!

Wayne caught a Jack. But the best part was that we had three huge fish on our lines that broke our 20 lb. test lines like it was a cobweb. It pulled out all my line. Those fish didn't even give us a chance to fight them. They were off and running away with our ballyhoo!

What a night! The sun goes down about 6:00 p.m. here. It was dark when we were fishing off the beach. It was partly cloudy and almost a full moon. There was no one else on the beach. We listened to the surf and the night sounds of the crickets and other critters while just behind us, a howler monkey was vociferiously claiming his territory.

On Sunday, Wayne and I went to Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Cocoa. Most all Catholic churches in face West and this one was painted bright green.

This photo was taken a few days before on our first trip to Cocoa.

It was Pentecost Sunday, the Feast of the Holy Spirit. Behind the altar are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit:Wisdom, Sabidura; Understanding, Entendiemento; Counsel, Consejo; Fortitude, Fortaleza; Knowledge, Conocimiento; Piety, Piedad; and Fear of the Lord, Temor de Dios.
They had a nice singing group with upbeat songs.

It was standing room only at the church and there were a few of us gringos in attendance. At the peace sign, the locals went all around the church greeting eachother and it was like a fiesta!

Here's the little shrine on the left side of the altar, where I lit a candle for our whole family.

Padre Caesar conducted Baptisms after Mass. There must have been 6 babies that were Baptised that day.

Get your lottery tickets here!! There were two venders at the church after Mass, selling lottery tickets to the congregation. I didn't see them at Mass :D.

How many photos of a beautiful sunset, puesta del sol, can you take? As many as you can until the sun sets. Yesterday's sunset was so beautiful and we were on the beach in time to see it.

Tangconcerveza Margaritas

When in Costa Rica, you have to have Margaritas, right? But what do you do when you can't get the ingredients similar to what you use in the Estados Unidos? You improvise, right? Missi devised an alternate recipe using lime Tang instead of the usual frozen lime concentrate, that we can't find here!

The Tanconcerveza Marguaritas taste fantastico!! Salude!

Groceries here are very expensivo, so Wayne didn't want to waste a drop of the Tangconcerveza Margaritas that spilled onto the counter!

Hollar Monkeys

It's amazing that right around us are so many hollar monkies. They are called hollar because the male is very vociferious and does a lot of hollaring, especially at the ATVs that the grounds keepers use as they are going from place to place around the resort.

Costa Rican Critters

There is wildlife all around our complex. Crab-eating raccoons (they eat Red Land Crabs), hollar monkies, crabs, geckos, iguanas, coatimundies and many varieties of birds and butterflies.

Today, we took a trip to Tamarindo, a very touristy town with a gorgeous beach. The grandkiddos wanted to collect shells; photos to be posted later. What I'd like to share on this post is the adventure of driving in Costa Rica. The roads are narrow and only two-lane. There are all ages of people walking or biking on the sides of the roads. Several bikes have two or three people on them. There are motocycles, ATVs, big and small trucks and cars coming your way and or following you. As one person we met said, "It's like driving on the roads with drunk teenagers." The best part is that the drivers almost always pass on double yellow lines. Black Sand Beach

There is a beautiful, black sand beach. It's the rainy season and so there are hardly any tourists around. For us from Wyoming, this is perfect weather and perfect because there aren't many people around. So, I call this the Wyoming of Costa Rica. We are the only people on the beach! Wayne just couldn't wait when he saw the water.

Our long-awaited, long-planned vacation to Costa Rica with Missi, David, Meg, Ella and Jack has finally become a reality. After a couple of smooth flights, a night in a lovely Country Inn and Suites in San Jose, we were finally headed for our final destination, Bahia Pez Vela. Our travel to the state of Guanacaste included driving through torrential rains on windy roads on the Pan-American Highway and trying to dodge crazy, wild car, bus, truck and motocycle drivers. We finally arrived on Sunday night, just about sundown.

Well, the Huberts of Laramie joined the Sheridan Huberts in a great adventure! We are in Costa Rica on the Pacific Northwest coast in a beautiful resort called Bahia Pez Vela (sailfish bay). All my former Spanish teachers would be proud of me because I am able to use the Spanish language that they taught me in class. We had a wonderful plane ride from Denver to Dallas, Dallas to San Jose. People were very nice through customs (it helps to have three young kiddos and two old abuelos in the party). The trip to Bahia Pez Vela was long, windy and rainy--this is the rainy season, but we're going to do the best we can :D. I'll post photos as soon as I can.

Since it's sooooo cold at the moment here in Laramie, I thought it was a great time to post the photos of our trip to Florida in January. Although, it was cold (a relative term) for a few days....actually, the temperature did go down to 29 degrees in Tampa on night and the high was 52...we thoroughly enjoyed our trip. We sure saw some beautiful sunsets.

Christmas Day was beautiful and we had a nice time together. I made a Polish dinner for my mom, i.e., ham, polish sausage, my grandmother's cabbage, rye bread. It was nice to be able to be together. Gregory certainly liked having spending Christmas with his grandma.

This is spring in Laramie at 7,200 on April 1, 2010! Unfortunately, it was not an April Fool's Joke. We had just gotten rid of most of the snow that had been around since October. I realize that we need the snow so that we can have water later in the summer. But, I really wish this would have been rain. At least it would have felt like spring. We got five inches of snow today! More tomorrow and next week. Happy Easter!! The Easter Bunny will need to wear ear muffs, for sure!

Last weekend, we went to see the grandbunnies that live in Wyoming. We first went to Sheridan to see Meg, Ella and Jack's new home and to help Missi and David get ready to move in. We got to go to Meg's and Ella's schools, meet their teachers, and some of the classmates. We learned that the girls are very good students, have great teachers, wonderful friends and love to learn. We were so happy to be invited to go to school with them!! And we are very proud of them.
Next week, their family will move to a different home. They will have precious memories of the house on Works Street and we will, too.

Meg, Ella and Jack taught us about Wii. Grandpa and I had never seen this wonderful technology. It was fun watching Meg and Ella downhill ski, race, bowl, play golf, baseball, exercise and create Grandpa Wayne and me in the Wii world!

I don't think we'll have to worry about Meg taking care of herself around the boys. She got to a very high level of accomplishment in the Wii Boxing!!

Grandpa Wayne tried the Wii Baseball. I think he had lots of fun. Maybe we need to get one of these for retirement fun!

The House on Linden Street

We took a walk to the new house on Linden. Grandpa Wayne and Dad had painted Jack's room on Friday and Saturday. Grandpa Wayne and Jack in his room. It is ready for him to move into.

Missi spent Saturday getting Meg's room already for her. Ella's room was ready for her, too.

Missi and David spent the whole day Saturday cleaning and painting so that everthing would be ready this week. Ella is standing on the ladder inspecting the painting job.

Fun With the Sheridan Grandkids at Kendrick Park

Kendrick Park is just a half a block from the new house. It was a nice day Saturday afternoon, so after we visited the house and looked at the newly painted bedrooms, we went off to the park. Brook even came with us to enjoy the fresh air. Jack has no fear. He climbed up the big slide, but he decided he didn't want to go down. Grandpa had a nice time swinging Jack.

Tim's Neat Game--ELEFUN

Tim got a great game for his birthday: ELEFUN. It's battery operated and when you turn it on, a fan in the elephant transports butterflies through its snout. Then the kiddos have to catch them in a net. You can see that Tim and Savannah are having lots of fun. And, if I can get my slow computer to dowload some videos, I'll post them later of Tim and Savannah's fun with ELEFUN!

Before Christmas, the Casper grandkiddos and their Mom and Dad and our granddog, Booke, were able to spend a little time together between snowstorms.

Speaking of snowstorms, Kim and the girls took refuge at our house in Janaury after a terrible ice storm and then a snowstorm knock out power all over their county. It was lucky for us because we got to spend time with the granddaughters from South Dakota. We had lots of fun!

When Gregory was about 12, in 1985, we got him a Nintendo. He always loved the Mike Tyson Puch-Out game and he still does. He can play the game all by himself and he's very good at it, too. This is the same Nintendo that he got way back then.

Over the last 20 years that Wayne and I have lived here, we've been graced with the pleasure of having Rufous and Broadtail humming birds visit us in July and August just before they migrate south and after the abundance of wildflowers in the mountains have been depleated. This year, they were a little late, having appeared here about 10 days ago. They are always a site to behold. We are amazed at their grace and beauty and their combativeness. They fight like crazy to defend their territory; the nectar. This is a female Roufus, we think, that came to feed about 8:00 p.m. The guys must have been bedded down for the night, so she had the nectar all to herself.

Flyfishing at the Lindzey Ranch

I hadn't been flyfishing in a couple of years. My personal fishing guide, Wayne, suggested we go to the Lindzey Ranch and he would give me a few lessons. The hay was almost ready to be harvested. As we walked through the fields to the Little Laramie River, we could smell the lovely perfume of the clover. My guide was very helpful and I even caught two fish, one was a cutthroat. I hope I don't wait two years to do this again. Practice makes perfect. I will hire this guide again.

Celebrating the 4th of July with the Sheridan Huberts

For the 4th of July, we made our way to Sheridan to spend the holiday with the Sheridan Huberts. Wayne and David had lots of fun fishing at one of David's favorite places (top secret). I got to go with Ella, Jack and Missi to the Brandford Brinton Memorial where Meggie and several other children, are making a garden there. They have planted vegetables and and flowers and tend the garden every Friday. What a beautiful place to be. We all went to Big Horn on July 4 to watch fireworks. They were fantastic and we had a great time!

Gregory goes swimming at the Laramie Rec Center every Monday. He really loves being in the water. Two of his caregivers, JD and Katie go with him and they do exercises in the pool. For two nights last week while we were in Saratoga, we sat in the back of Steve and Nancy's garage and watched FOX TV. On the hill in back of our townhouses there was a vixen and six kits. The babies are now almost the size of their mom. She watched over them while they played, ran, and scurried around. It was so much fun to watch them. This vixen has been really busy caring for her six kits. She looks a little worse for wear as she is pretty thin and scraggley. I guess you would be too if you had sextuplets!!

The Six Little Foxes

The little foxes certainly are busy. They run and jump and play with each other. They chase their brothers and sisters around and catch mice and voles. They are almost as big as their mom and will soon be leaving the den. This was a real treat to be able to watch them from our back alley.

Two weeks ago, I noticed a pregnant doe in the area across from our alley. She gave birth to twins. These are a few of the photos we took of the mama and babies.

We have two beautiful draft horses that live up the block from us. Their owner lets them keep down the vegitation in the back of our townhouses and they do a great job.

Wayne and I took care of the Casper grandkids while Phil and Jodi were out of town for three days. We had a great time together just being able to be with and watch how they each have grown into such fascinating and sweet kids. Savannah is not in the photo because she was sleeping.

Chef Allie Shakes Up the Kitchen

Allie suggested that we have milk shakes for desserts. Lindsay was her helper and took orders for different kinds of shakes.

It Always Helps to Put the Blender Together

Grandpa Wayne was the clean up man after the the milk shakes leaked out of the bottom of the blender, when the top and bottom of the blender were not screwed on tight.

Of course, we won't talk mention my spilling the spaghetti all over the floor and forgetting the green beans in the microwave until the next morning. But the grandkiddos survived us and we had a wonderful time together.

Grandpa and Tim do "Guy Stuff"

Grandpa and Tim had a great time together while we were visitng. Tim immediately put on his "Grandpa hat." Then they proceeded to have some "tool time." They went to Home Depot, the park and Sportman's Warehouse, where Grandpa got some "boat handles" (canoe paddles) as Tim called them.

Lindsay's Rainbow Birthday Presents

I took Lindsay to the mall and she got some presents for her birthday. She was 8 on June 12. Lindsay developed a Rainbow theme. She got a rainbow colored headband, necklace, bracelet, earrings, nail polish and candy.

I painted Savannah's toes a pretty shade of green. She was very patient--it took me all of 5 seconds to paint those tiny toe nails.

I loved spending time with Sweet Savannah. She is interested in so many things, especially shoes. She entertained herself by putting her shoes in a doll stroller and pushing it around the kitchen and living room.

Wayne had a nice time fishing and canoeing on Saratoga Lake. He also acted as my fishing guide. Wayne caught several nice, fat Rainbow Trout. We enjoy getting on the lake in our canoe.

Irises Blooming in Encampment

Wayne and I were able to spend several days in Saratoga last week. It was nice to get back there. On Saturday it was too windy to fish, so we toured the area and drove down some back roads. Near Encampment, there was a field of irises that were in full bloom. The background is the Sierra Madre mountains. It's great to have all this beauty in your back yard.
